Toddler · 2–3Color the number 6 — six. Six and nine are the same shape turned half a turn, so it helps to talk about where the stroke starts rather than what the shape looks like. Six also splits usefully — three and three, or five and one — and noticing those splits is early addition arriving without being announced. Color the 6 circles beside it too, touching each one as you count out loud — the last number you say is how many there are, and that is not obvious to a four-year-old. Print it on A4 or US Letter, or color it online with tap-to-fill.
Six, and the 6/9 problem
Six and nine are the same shape rotated half a turn, which makes them the numerical equivalent of b and d. Unlike letters, though, there is a physical tell that works: a 6 starts high and curls down into its loop at the bottom, so the loop sits below. A 9 is the reverse. Describing the stroke rather than the shape is what separates them.

Counting past five
Watch whether your child counts all six circles from one every time, or starts from five and counts on. Counting on is a real developmental step and worth encouraging gently: you know there are five here, so how many altogether? Most children begin doing it somewhere around five or six years old.
