Three blocks, three colours
This page is a stack of three lettered blocks, and it is built to be coloured differently — each block is its own region, so a child who fills all three the same colour has made a choice rather than missed the point. Ask for three different colours and the page immediately becomes about comparison: which is on top, which is in the middle, which is underneath.
Position words are genuinely useful vocabulary at this age and surprisingly hard to teach in the abstract. On top of, underneath, in between, above, below. A stack of blocks puts all of them in front of a child at once.
Blocks and the alphabet
The letters on the blocks are worth naming as you colour, but lightly — the point of this page is the stacking, not the ABC. If your child wants to name the letters, follow them; if they want to make the bottom block green, that is equally good use of the page.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do position words matter?
- On top, underneath, in between and behind are the vocabulary of instructions, and children who have them follow directions far more easily at nursery. They are hard to teach without an object to point at, which is what a stack of blocks provides.
- Should I ask my child to use a different colour for each block?
- Ask once, then let it go. The suggestion opens up the page; insisting on it turns a choice into a task and usually ends the colouring early.
