Stroke order for G
Lowercase g starts as a c-family letter — the anticlockwise circle first — then a straight line down the right side that carries on below the writing line and hooks left. Circle, then tail, in that order.
This is likely the first descender your child has traced, and the guideline on the sheet is there to be crossed rather than respected. Saying so beforehand prevents the hovering-above-the-line version.
What to watch for
A tail that hooks right instead of left turns the letter into something closer to a q. Trace the hook direction with a finger a couple of times before the pencil goes anywhere near it — direction lives in the hand, not the eye.

- What are descenders?
- The parts of g, j, p, q and y that drop below the writing line. Naming them as a group gives a child a reason to notice the line, which visibly tidies early handwriting.
- Why does the g in books look different?
- Print often uses a two-storey g with a loop underneath, which is not the one children are taught to write. A child who points this out is being observant rather than confused.
