A ring, a bow and some berries
A wreath is a ring, which is a more demanding shape to colour than it looks — there is an edge on the outside and another on the inside, and the hole in the middle is meant to stay empty. Children regularly fill it in, and noticing that the middle is not part of the wreath is a real observation.
The berries scattered around it are small bounded areas that reward care, and the bow adds a shape with its own structure. Together that gives the page three levels of difficulty in one image, which is useful when siblings of different ages are colouring the same thing.
Green, or not
A wreath has an obvious natural colouring, which makes it a good page for a child who enjoys getting things right — and an equally good one to subvert. Ask for an autumn wreath in oranges and browns, or a spring one in pinks. The shape survives either, and choosing a palette deliberately is a step up from choosing colours one at a time.

- Why does my child colour in the middle of the ring?
- Because an enclosed white space looks like something to fill. Pointing out that the hole is where the door shows through is usually all it takes, and it is a useful lesson in looking at what a shape represents.
- Is this too detailed for a toddler?
- The ring and bow are fine from about three. The berries can simply be left white, or coloured over, without spoiling the page.
