A spell book separates into the cover, the pages and a star on the front. The pages are the detail worth noticing — a stack of thin lines along the edge that shows the book has depth. It is the same observation as the snow globe: the drawing is telling you something about a three-dimensional object.
The cover is a big open area and the obvious place for a child to put their own mark, which is what this page is really for.
Write your own spell
The cover has room for a title, and a child who can write their name can write a book title. For a child who cannot yet, take dictation — ask what the spell does and write it for them. Seeing their own words written down is one of the more powerful things you can do for a pre-writer, and it is the whole basis of how early writing is taught in school.
